CAN YOU HEAR THE ROAR OF THE CROWD?
Don't downgrade your dream just to fit your reality. Upgrade your conviction to match your destiny..
I happened across the movie Vision Quest not too long ago, an eighties movie starring Matthew Modine. I've seen it a few times. It's one of those movies that you just have stop on when you're flicking through channels. Modine plays Louden Swain, an eighteen-year-old high school student on the wrestling team who drops two weight classes to fight the three time state champion Brian Shute from a rival school.
The movie's title is taken from an English term used to describe the right of passage journey in some Native American cultures. In a nutshell, Vision Quests require fasting and spending time alone to guide you to your purpose in life, supported by your community to give you clarity on your role in the community.
Louden Swain wanted to find purpose. He wanted to do something great, something meaningful, so he challenged himself to push his physical and mental limits. In the end, he wins of course and his teammates hoist him up on their shoulders and the crowd roars.
There are many ways that we challenge ourselves each day and I think sometimes we need to stop and take a moment to hear the roar of the crowd, feel ourselves being lifted up by our teammates and enjoy our accomplishments.
Last summer I was on a retreat for work and each of us were asked the question, "What will you be celebrating this time next year?"
Without hesitation I said, "I will be celebrating the publication of my book Writing Your Own Life," and here I am, one year later with my newly published book. To challenge yourself to do something you thought you could never do is an amazing feeling and deserves a victorious celebration, even if it's in your own mind.
Think how uplifting life could be by not only taking time to smell the roses, but celebrating them when you do. No matter what your challenges are. Maybe you're a single parent? Maybe you have a physical challenge that makes everyday life more difficult? Maybe you are on the road to recovering from an addiction? All of these challenges, plus working long hours, multiple jobs and taking care of the ones we love can weigh us down if we let it.
Try this the next time you finish the dishes, a load of laundry or a workout. Close your eyes and raise your hands above your head and feel yourself being lifted high above the ground. Do you hear it? It's there. Take a moment to hear the roar of the crowd. For every person who's been afraid to try, doubted themselves, struggled to get by or faced adversity, there are people out there just like you; cheering for you.
Celebrating every little thing will give you the strength and motivation to take on the big things that will make a difference in the world and give you clarity on purpose in your own life and your own role in the community.
Challenge yourself...hear the roar of the crowd and accomplish amazing things!
